The research conducted at the Laboratoire Jacques-Louis Lions pertains to applied mathematics. It encompasses more particularly the mathematical modeling of physical phenomena stemming from physics, but also mechanics, biology, medicine, chemistry, information processing, economics, finance, etc. These models answer questions raised by other research centres or R&D industrial teams. They generally involve to partial differential equations. The work focuses on the derivation of models, on their theoretical and numerical analyses and on their simulation.
The spectrum of research themes can therefore be qualified as sharply focused (partial differential equations with emphasis on their theoretical and numerical aspects), or as extremely broad (modeling, analysis and simulation of complex phenomena in various application fields). They can be viewed through the applications angle or from that of mathematical tools.
It is difficult to describe in just a few words all the research that is carried out at the Laboratoire Jacques-Louis Lions. It ranges from the most theoretical analysis of the properties related to partial differential equations to high performance computing and visualization, also exploring optimization and control, as well as the construction and analysis of innovative numerical methods. For a (very) detailed presentation, one may for example refer to documents for the preparation of the 2018 five-year plan. We will soon provide a presentation of the Laboratory that is better adapted for a first contact.
