Roland Glowinski died on January 26, 2022 at the age of eighty-four.
Roland Glowinski was a professor at our university from the creation of the laboratory until the early 1990s. He was then at the University of Houston for about ten years. He was next emeritus professor of the Laboratory and emeritus professor at the University of Houston. He was elected a correspondent of the Academy of Sciences in 1987, and in 2005 he became a member of the Academy of Sciences.
He was one of the closest collaborators of Jacques-Louis Lions and one of the pillars of the Laboratoire d’Analyse Numérique (which later became the LJLL). It is in particular thanks to him that the laboratory has always worked in close collaboration with INRIA.
Roland Glowinski’s scientific activity has been essentially devoted to the numerical resolution of problems modeled by partial differential equations or inequalities, most of these problems coming from applications related to mechanics, physics and engineering Sciences.
He wrote many books, you may have read some ! He had many students, you may be one of them !
He was one of the first to apply the conjugate gradient method to PDEs and to use Lagrange multipliers numerically for saddle point problems. He was a pioneer in many fields, including parallel computing.
He was always in a good mood, very attentive to others. He was a great friend ! The laboratory can be proud to have counted him in its ranks, he was an eminent member.
His reputation is universal. He will be missed.
