Korn inequalities for special functions of bounded deformation

The function spaces SBV (special functions of bounded variation) and SBD (special functions of bounded deformation) play a fundamental role in the variational analysis of damage and fracture models. For problems in a geometrically linear setting formulated in SBD major difficulties arise from the fact that in contrast to SBV for generic configurations only the symmetric part of the distributional derivative can be controlled. Therefore, it is desirable to gain profound understanding of the relation between SBV and SBD functions. In the talk I will present some results in this direction which are based on the validity of certain Korn-type inequalities in these function spaces.
