Time-splitting schemes for incompressible fluid-structure interaction

The numerical approximation of fluid-structure interaction problems involving an incompressible fluid and an elastic structure is very sensitive to the way the interface coupling conditions (kinematic and kinetic continuity) are treated at the discrete level. For instance, it is well known that the stability of explicit Dirichlet-Neumann coupling schemes (involving only one fluid and one solid resolution per time step) is dictated by the physics and geometry of the system, irrespectively of the discretization parameters. Examples in blood flows siùulations are popular. In this talk we will present an overview of some splitting time-marching alternatives circumventing these infamous instabilities.
